Q: Can you clarify Rule #1 under General Rules – Eligibility?
A: The NFMC Bylaws currently state: “Junior – young people under 19; Student/Collegiate members – between 19 and 26 years.” The Bulletin policy is supported by the Bylaws.
Q: Has there been a change dealing with levels of solo/ensemble entrants?
A: There has been no change. Solo class of ensemble entrants must be within two classes.
Q: Why were some events eliminated from the 2011 – 2012 – 2013 Bulletin?
A: Some events were eliminated from the printing because of lack of participation. Those events may continue to be entered. Contact the NFMC Bulletin Chairman/Editor for a list of appropriate repertoire.
Q: Can you explain the rule about Sight Playing/Singing on page 67?
A: The entrant will be expected to sight play/sing approximately two levels below the present solo performing level but the rating sheet will reflect the higher level.
Ex. Primary III will be sight reading at Primary I but gets credit for Primary II
Q: Are “revised” piano solos acceptable?
A: All piano solo selections listed in the 2011 – 2012 – 2013 are intended to be original solos by the composer. An example: Melodie and Serenade from the Fantasy Pieces, Op. 3, written in 1892 by Rachmaninoff, are not listed in the bulletin as “revised”, thus the revised version (written 1940) should not be used. ASE means that several publishers print the original
Q: Why can’t I find Kokopelli’s Flute or Spider vs Fly for Primary I in Piano Solo?
A: These pieces are from MY KIND OF MUSIC, Bk 1, FF1703, FJH, Copyright 2008. MY KIND OF MUSIC, Bk 1, FF1283, Copyright 2001 is now being published as MY KIND OF MUSIC, Bk 2 and is not being used in the current Bulletin
Q: Are there two titles for Laure’s Song?
A: In Vocal Musical Theater Once I thought I’d Never grow Up and Laurie’s Song are on in the same.
Q: What do I do if I have a question about the Festival rules?
A: There is a proper order to follow and the first step is to consult your Area Chairman.
Q: What do I do if I have a question about the repertoire listed in the Bulletin?
A: You should contact the NFMC Festivals Chairman/Editor. (See festivals link for more information)
Q: What is the lowest permissible entry class for any piano ensemble?
A: In keeping with the rule that levels of musicianship must be of the same level the lowest permissible entry class for any piano ensemble is one class below the lower partner’s solo class.
Q: Is it possible for a Piano Duet and Piano Duo to have the same title?
A: Yes. These are two different events and the arrangements are different; therefore the same title could appear at different levels and different events.
Q: Are page-tuners allowed in ensemble events?
A: Page-turners are allowed in ensemble events that do not require memorization for the sole purpose of turning pages.
Q: Does Rule #5 under General Rules – page 3 apply to all instruments including hymns and vocal events?
A: Yes, the number of measures required applies to all instruments and includes vocal events and hymn playing.
